MISA protests at harassment of journalists in Cabo Delgado

  Paul Fauvet   2025-07-07  Maputo, 7 Jul (AIM) – The regional press freedom body MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa) protested on Wednesday at the intimidation of a group of journalists, and the temporary confiscation of their equipment, by members of the defence and security forces in Macomia district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. MISA sent a request to the Defence Ministry asking for an urgent explanation of the incident, which involved 16 journalists from several of the country’s media. MISA said the incident was a serious violation of press freedom. The journalists, all based in the provincial capital, Pemba, were on a professional mission organised by the National Roads Administration (ANE). They were heading to Mueda district to cover work on paving the road between Mueda and Negomano, on the Tanzanian border. Terrorists claim deaths of 30 soldiers in Macomia

Alberto Massango   2025-07-07  Maputo, 7 Jul (AIM) – The Islamist terrorists responsible for extreme violence in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado claim to have murdered at least 30 members of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) in the Quiterajo administrative post, in Macomia district. The terrorists, through the Islamic State propaganda channels, claim that the attack took place on 28 June. They claim to have captured a soldier who was subjected to an interrogation, in which he said he had been trained and recently graduated from a course that in Nacala city, in Nampula province. The course was given by Mozambican and Rwandan military instructors. The terrorists also claim to be in possession of assets seized from the FADM. However, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, the Islamic State propaganda channels did not present clear evidence to prove the death of the 30 soldiers.   PRESS RELEASE New data shows that Mozambique falls short across almost all human rights indicators   New data released today by independent NGO, the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI), show that Mozambique is trailing far behind in almost all its’ human rights commitments. Mozambique's very low Safety from the State score of 2.1 out of 10 suggests that many people are not safe from one or more of the following: arbitrary arrest, torture and ill-treatment, forced disappearance, execution, or extrajudicial killing . Furthermore, not only do all of Mozambique’s Safety from the State scores fall within HRMI’s ‘very bad’ range, but it is ranked the lowest globally out of all countries sampled , tying with Kenya, China, and Bangladesh.
